Small Laser Cutting Jobs in Melbourne: Files and Materials

Small batches of laser cut metal parts

Need a few flat metal parts, a prototype or a short production run? Shug provides laser cutting for small jobs from our Mooroolbark workshop in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. A clear drawing and the required quantity help us understand the work before cutting begins.

Our cutting range is mild steel up to 10 mm, stainless steel up to 3 mm and aluminium up to 2 mm. This service is for metal parts. Choose the material and thickness for your project, and include any grade or finish requirements when you quote.

Small batches can include brackets, panels, signs and custom profiles. A flat cutting drawing describes the cut shape; bending, welding or other fabrication needs should be discussed separately. See our laser cutting services and work gallery for more information and examples.

Prepare your small laser cutting job

  1. Prepare a vector file. We accept AI, EPS, DWG and DXF, with DXF preferred. Draw the part at 1:1 scale in millimetres. Photos and screenshots need conversion before cutting.
  2. Clean up the drawing. Remove dimensions, notes, borders and duplicate lines. Close the outlines and convert text to outlines. Add bridges to stencil lettering where internal pieces must remain attached.
  3. Provide quantities. Name each different part clearly and state how many you need. Leave repeated parts unnested so we can arrange the cutting layout.
  4. Explain the job requirements. Include material, thickness, finish, any further fabrication and your required timing. Ask about narrow features or uncertain design details before ordering.

For a small order, material choice, the number of different parts, cut detail and quantity all affect the quote. Check our laser cutting FAQ for minimum-charge information and other common questions.
