Laser Cutting Steel for Your Next Project

Choose the right steel and thickness

For a steel laser cutting project, specify the type of steel as well as the sheet thickness. Shug cuts mild steel up to 10 mm and stainless steel up to 3 mm at our Mooroolbark workshop in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. These are different material specifications, so a request for “steel” alone does not give enough information for the job. Include the grade and surface finish if your project requires them. If you have not chosen the material yet, discuss the requirements before ordering. We also laser cut aluminium up to 2 mm. See our metal laser cutting services for the full cutting range, or read the stainless steel cutting guide for that material.

Specify the job before cutting begins

Provide one drawing for each different part

Supply a vector file at 1:1 scale in millimetres. We accept AI, EPS, DWG and DXF, with DXF preferred. Remove dimensions, notes, borders and duplicate cut paths. Close the outlines and convert lettering to outlines so the drawing clearly describes the parts to cut.

Tell us the quantity of each part and use clear filenames. Leave repeated parts unnested; Shug arranges them for cutting. The drawing preparation guidelines show examples.

Include critical details and further work

If a slot, hole or overall dimension is critical to the part’s use, identify that requirement before ordering. Tell us whether the project also needs bending, welding or a particular finish so those steps can be discussed separately from cutting.

Include your required timing and any questions about the drawing. Our laser cutting FAQ covers common questions, including minimum charges.
