Getting started with a steel cutting job

When ordering steel laser cutting, specify the material and thickness required by your drawing. Shug cuts mild steel up to 10 mm and stainless steel up to 3 mm at our Mooroolbark workshop in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. These are different materials with different cutting limits. Do not reduce the specified thickness simply because a drawing is intricate. The part still needs to meet its intended requirements. Your drawing, material and quantity

State the steel type and grade

Include whether the part is mild steel or stainless steel, its thickness, and any grade required by the project specification. A drawing labelled only “steel” can leave important information unclear. Match the material information in your quote request to the drawing and the parts you need.

Use the finished dimensions

Prepare your vector drawing at 1:1 scale in millimetres. Keep cut paths separate from notes, dimensions and borders. Remove duplicate lines and check that the contours are closed. Convert text to outlines where lettering is part of the design.

Read our file preparation guidelines for the drawing checks. You do not need to specify laser power or machine settings in a normal cutting enquiry; provide the finished part requirements instead.

Confirm quantities and additional work

Supply one drawing per different part, with a clear filename and the quantity required. Leave repeated parts unnested. If the job includes further fabrication, finish requirements or a required date, discuss those details rather than assuming they are included in the cutting quote.
