Metal laser cutting for Melbourne projects
A laser cutting quote is most useful when the drawing and material requirements are clear. For brackets, panels, signs or prototype parts, start with the finished dimensions, metal thickness and quantity. Shug provides metal laser cutting in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs from our Mooroolbark workshop.
Our cutting range is mild steel up to 10 mm, stainless steel up to 3 mm and aluminium up to 2 mm. This article explains the information to prepare for your job, rather than assuming every laser cutting provider offers the same materials or capacity.
Define your parts before you upload
Choose the material and thickness
Identify the metal and any grade required by your project specification. Keep that specification consistent across the drawing, quote and order. If the parts will need further fabrication or a particular finish, discuss those requirements before placing the job.
Supply a clear vector drawing
Prepare the drawing at 1:1 scale in millimetres. Remove dimensions, borders, unused objects and duplicate cut lines. Convert text to outlines and check that the cut contours are closed. For signs or stencils, include bridges where internal pieces need to stay connected.
Our laser cutting file guidelines explain these checks. We accept AI, EPS, DWG and DXF for drawing enquiries, with DXF preferred. The online instant quoting tool provides DXF and DWG upload options.
Specify quantities without nesting
Supply one drawing for each different part and tell us the quantity of each. Use clear filenames so the correct quantity can be matched to the right part. Leave repeated parts unnested; arranging them across a sheet is part of preparing the cutting job.
Include project requirements
A cut metal profile may be one step in a larger project. Let us know about further fabrication, finish requirements or a required date so these can be discussed. An online cutting quote should not be treated as confirmation of additional work that has not been specified.
