Laser Cutting Quotes: What Affects the Price?
Comparing laser cutting quotes is easier when you know what you are comparing. Material, sheet thickness, part size, cutting detail and quantity can all change the result. For Melbourne projects, the best starting point is a quote based on your actual drawing rather than a price borrowed from another job.
At Shug Fabrication & Design in Mooroolbark, you can upload DXF or DWG parts through our instant laser cutting quote tool. If you need help turning artwork or an idea into a usable cutting file, send a design enquiry for direct review instead.
Start with the material and thickness
Two parts with the same outline are not necessarily the same job. Changing the metal or thickness changes what needs to be supplied and processed. Select the material your project actually needs before comparing prices, and keep that selection consistent between quotes.
Our current laser cutting thickness limits are:
- Mild steel: up to 10 mm.
- Stainless steel: up to 3 mm.
- Aluminium: up to 2 mm.
These are our service limits, rather than the capabilities of every laser machine. For more information, read our guide to laser cutting materials and thickness limits. If you are unsure which option suits the application, ask before ordering.
Part size is only part of the picture
A plain rectangle and a decorative panel can occupy similar space on a sheet while requiring very different cutting paths. Internal holes, slots and detailed outlines add features to process. As TRUMPF explains in its laser cutting process overview, the beam follows the contour of the workpiece. This helps explain why the outside dimensions alone do not describe the whole cutting job.
For a useful comparison, quote the finished design. Do not remove necessary holes or details just to obtain a lower starting figure. If a decorative feature is optional, you can compare versions and decide whether it is worth including.
Compare quantities using the same drawing
If you need several identical parts, enter the actual quantity. You can also compare a prototype quantity with the batch you expect to need later. Keep the drawing, material and thickness unchanged so that quantity is the main difference.
Look at both the total price and the price per part. A larger batch may work out better per item, but that is not a guarantee that every extra part is free or that one quantity always gives the best value. Use the quote tool to compare your own parts rather than relying on a fixed discount assumption.
Allow for the minimum charge
Our minimum charge is $132 including taxes. That matters when budgeting for a small job: a single small part should not be priced by material area alone.
If you need a few different parts for the same project, prepare the full list before requesting a quote. Compare the resulting job total without assuming additional parts will cost nothing. Our small laser cutting jobs guide explains the file and material information to have ready.
Check what your laser cutting quote includes
Before comparing two totals, check that the scope matches. Keep a note of the drawing revision, material, thickness and number of each part. If you need design assistance, finishing, fabrication or a particular delivery arrangement, ask for those requirements to be reviewed and priced. Do not assume they are included in a cutting-only figure.
